Chapter Thirty-Three

After he finished his research through the law enforcement databases, Drew returned to the supposed comfort of the Starlight Motel. He turned on the television and watched a few innings of the Dodgers game for a mental break. The hotel television painted the Astroturf infield in shifting shades of pink. The announcer sounded like he was underwater.

A knock sounded at the motel room door.

Drew jumped off the couch and grabbed his gun from the table. There was a chance the demon had tracked him down here. There was an even greater chance that someone had seen the check-in records and mistaken his room for that of some witness the Sheriff’s Department was trying to keep in hiding. What there was no chance of was that room service was out there with steak and champagne. He took a position to the right of the door.

Earlier someone had shoved a flyer for pizza delivery under the door. He scooped it up and covered the peephole with it. If anyone had a gun barrel pointed at the peephole, the sudden lack of light from the other side was the cue to pull the trigger and put a bullet in the room occupant’s head. He waited.

No gunshot.

He leaned over and looked out the peephole. All he got was a fish-eye view of the crappy neighborhood across the street.

Another knock sounded at the door. Drew realized it was from knee level.

Now he looked down. An older man in a wheelchair sat in front of the door. He was groomed and in clean clothes, so he probably wasn’t a homeless guy looking for a handout. That still didn’t mean the man wasn’t dangerous.

“Who is it?” Drew said.

“My name is Greg Wolter. I’m looking for Drew Price.”

Drew flipped the safety off on his pistol. He’d counted on the motel manager to value the LASD contract too much to give him up. He might have been wrong about that one.

“What do you want?” Drew said.

“I used to work with Lincoln Jordan. I think we should talk in private.”

This man in the wheelchair outside knew where Drew was and knew Drew was connected to Lincoln. Drew didn’t have more tightly kept secrets than those. At a minimum, Drew wanted to find out where Greg had gotten his information.

He unlocked the door and eased it open, pistol still at the ready just in case. He looked down at Greg, then right and left down the balcony. Greg was alone. Drew opened the door the rest of the way and waved Greg in with a shake of his head. Greg rolled past him and Drew slammed the door. He locked it and spun around with his pistol pointed at Greg.

“Hey man, what the hell?” Greg said.

“Call it justifiable paranoia.”

“That’s an oxymoron,” Greg said. He raised his hands. “But feel free to search me.”

Drew assessed the man’s demeanor, factored in his clothes and the near-new state of the wheelchair. He concluded that the consent for the search was as good as undergoing it for this man.
